Secret to Make High Quality Content
I know you might be thinking I’ll take anybody I can get! But hear me out. Read through the whole post, and then decide for yourself if you think the idea has merit. It works for me, and I think it can work for you, too. What’s the secret? I’ve created a Profile of my ideal reader.
It was probably a happy accident you came across that blog. But it doesn’t have to be just a happy accident. It could happen because the blog author is deliberately writing content designed to appeal to you.
You want to write up a profile of your ideal reader, and then constantly write to that “person.” The result is that you’re going to attract similar people to your blog. You can even go so far as to give that person a name and a picture! Just find a picture of someone online that fits your image of your ideal reader.

Demographics
In business and marketing, it’s common (although not as common as it should be) to focus marketing and sales efforts on a particular group of people based on demographic information about them. Demographics are data such as a person’s age, sex, region, education level, employment status, marriage status, parent status (kids or no kids), income levels, and so forth. For the internet, we also include the kind of information that our visitor tracking software gives us: operating system, browser, and monitor resolution. You can’t please everybody
There are many different kinds of people in the world–far too many for you to please everybody. Consider focusing on just one group. This is really the “other side” of having a niche subject matter. You have a niche target audience. It’s easier to make one very specific group of people happy with your blog’s content. How do you do this? By creating a profile of your ideal reader.Create a profile of your ideal reader
A profile is a fictional dossier of “facts” and traits that represent an ideal. In the case of your blog, this ideal is your ideal reader. The profile is going to be made of all the demographic data I mentioned above, plus the “techno-graphic” data. But there is more. You may also want to consider:- religious views (or lack thereof)
- political views
- environmental consciousness
- how much of a “do it yourself” person they are
- what kind of learner they are: do they prefer text, audio, video, or interaction?
- what kinds of products or services they’re likely to buy online, if you’re monetizing your blog through ads or affiliate sales
- how they feel about love and romance
The secret
How are you going to know all of this? You’re not! What? Here is the secret of how this works: You pick and choose what you want them to be. How can this possibly work? Let me ask you a couple quick questions: have you ever been to a blog that you didn’t “connect” with? Did you stay or did you leave? Probably, you left quickly! Have you ever been to a blog where you feel as though they were speaking right to you? Not only did you stay, you probably subscribed and commented. And you would also be more trusting of them if they recommended products or services. It was probably a happy accident you came across that blog. But it doesn’t have to be just a happy accident. It could happen because the blog author is deliberately writing content designed to appeal to you.

The long tail of people
Doesn’t this mean that a lot of people will not like your blog? Yes! And that, believe it or not, is the point! You don’t want everybody to like your blog, you want the right people to like it. Especially if you’re selling something or monetizing your blog, because that means that the ads or products on your blog are extremely relevant. High relevancy means high click-through rates. This is a variation on the idea of the long tail. Across the whole world, there are probably plenty of people who match your ideal reader. Enough to give you a decent audience. How to create a profile of your ideal reader
Your challenge is to create a profile of your ideal reader, and then blog just for that “person.” Here’s how:- Using the demographic and technographic categories listed above, write out the “statistics” and facts about your ideal reader.
- Write out additional information using the second list of views and personality traits.
- Give your ideal reader a name and find a picture that seems typical for the person you just created.
- Study the information until you know it well.
- Write a test post just to this “person” and see how it goes. Did it feel natural and confident? Keep trying until it does, then begin writing to your ideal reader on your blog.

Improve Your Blog, Revisit Old Content Then Publish it
Rather than trying to increase the promotion and links I have focused on the site itself, looking at how I could improve the content itself to improve SEO and increase the amount of pages each visitor views.
My goal with these improvements is to try to set up myself as a WordPress and Web Development 'guru', and to increase my subscriber list. So I am focusing on the people who read my website as opposed to trying to get new readers.
To do this I am analysing my Google Analytics logs and revisiting old content accordingly.
To show this is actually doing something worthwhile I have attached an image of my Feedburner stats. As you can see from my stats there has been a steady increase in subscribers since January 2010 when I started this experiment. This could also be attributed to the fact I have been writing and releasing a post pretty steadily, however I have not published anything in a couple of weeks and my stats are still increasing.
Revisiting old content is a very simple way to improve your website with relatively minimal effort. The main thing I have done is going back to old posts and improving them. There are a few different things I do with each post.

- Edit - many of the posts are quite old, and my writing style has evolved, so I often end up tweaking the content to make it better. The tweaking is not just about punctuation and grammar though. I also tweak the keywords used in the article to improve SEO.
- Update - many of my articles are about elements of WordPress or web design that were relevant years ago, but are now out of date - so I either bring them up to date, or I write an up to date post and link to it from the old post.
- Internal Links - I've written a lot over the years, so it's worthwhile going through old posts and linking to newer, relevant, posts. This will encourage people to move around the site (increase page views), and improve SEO for the newer content (increase inbound links).
- External Links - besides the internal links you should check the external ones. In going through the old posts I have found a number of sites I linked to have either closed or changed hands or been redesigned and the content has moved. Updating the links to relevant articles helps build trust. In addition a couple of the sites I was linking to have closed and been replaced by splogs or domain holding pages (those with loads of paid links on) and I don't want to give them my hard-earned page rank.
- Images - another thing to think about is adding images. On my site it's even more worthwhile as I now use post thumbnails, but decent photos are well-known for encouraging people to read more content.
5 Tips For Increasing Adsense Earnings (Without Increasing Traffic)
The tips I am about to tell you are what worked for me, but I encourage you to try different things as each site is unique.
In simple terms, the older the page the more ads you show.
Despite the fact that I have advertising, I don't actually like it. I have 0 to very few adverts on new posts, and increase the ads on older ones. This isn't so obvious here on Binary Moon, but on Binary Joy I have gone a little crazy - but there is a method to my madness. The theory is that older posts will be more appealing to search engines, and visitors who come from search engines are more likely to click on ads. Another side effect is that I "reward" regular visitors by not annoying them with adverts, so I feel this is a good compromise. As I said above I'll go into this one in more detail next week (with code).
The idea is that you place these comments around your core page content. That is, the content which is mostly text, and which best reflects the content of your site. On a blog this will generally be the main post content. The reason you do this is so that the adverts don't target irrelevant content such as the links in your sidebar.
You can also add regions you want Google to ignore. I haven't used these myself but they are something I intend to try in the not too distant future. You can read more on the section targeting page of the Google Adsense help.
To do the show/ hide css on your refferal code all I do is have a div with my referral button in it, which I hide. I then use conditional css comments to load some css to display the advert in IE.
I've put together a simple example of what I mean below. Just copy and paste the code below into a new htm document and then view it in IE and Firefox. In IE you will see the ad block at the top of the page, in Firefox is "magically" disappears.
1. Colour and Position
This is probably the optimization which is mentioned most regularly, but it's for good reason. You really should experiment with different ad positions and different colour combinations. Each time you make a change leave the ads for a week and see how your earnings alter. Make a note of what works and then try something new. I was always sceptical when I read these comments before but since I have started playing with positioning my adsense revenue has multiplied by 4 times (crazy but true). Personally I've found that blending ads into the site works very well but it's not the only way and you should try all the combinations you can think of.2. Different date, different adverts
This is one of my favourites and I intend to write a post on how to do this next week, for now I will stick to the what and why.In simple terms, the older the page the more ads you show.

3. Content Targeting
This one is a very simple change and is ridiculously straight forward to implement. Google have a simple comment tag that you can place around your primary content, and this is what your ads will be targeted to.<!-- google_ad_section_start --> Key page content here <!-- google_ad_section_end -->
The idea is that you place these comments around your core page content. That is, the content which is mostly text, and which best reflects the content of your site. 4. Referrals
Google Referrals don't make me a huge amount of money, but I like to include them on all my sites. Currently I only use one referral package and it only displays in Internet Explorer on the PC. It's for the Firefox browser, and earns me roughly a dollar for every new install I generate. Some sneaky css removes the ad for Firefox users so that they don't get pestered with unnecessary adverts. To do the show/ hide css on your refferal code all I do is have a div with my referral button in it, which I hide. I then use conditional css comments to load some css to display the advert in IE.

<html> <head> <title>Ad Show Hide demo</title> <style> #adDiv { display:none; } </style> <!--[if IE]> <style> #adDiv { display:block; /* some extra styles to make the ad stand out */ border:1px solid #eee; padding:10px; } </style> <![endif]--> </head> <body> <div id="adDiv">Stick your advert in here</div> <h2>Ad test</h2> <p>Some page content</p> </body> </html>
5. SEO and Content
I get about 75% of my traffic from search engines and, in my opinion, search engine visitors are the ones most likely to click on adverts, far more so than the regular visitors (which ties into the date based adverts above). Search engine visitors are on a journey to find some information, if they can't find what they want on my site then they might as well find it on one of my advertisers sites, and that's the good thing about contextual advertising - the ads are relevant to my readers.
